You can’t reduce your cost if you stick to an outdated way of doing your accounting. As a small business accountant, we urge you to use a cloud-based accounting platform. There are two accounting platforms that we recommend: QuickBooks Online and Xero.
Your cloud-based platform will function as your financial hub. It will send sales invoices to your customers, receive payments from them, record expenses, process payroll and monitor your cashflow. All of these can be done without an inhouse bookkeeper.

We have formed a new sister company to better serve eCommerce clients. The new company, eComGuru Accounting Services Inc., specializes in resolving the U.S. and Canadian sales tax issues often encountered by eCommerce merchants who are selling directly to consumers in North America. It also offers bookkeeping services to Shopify stores with high transaction volumes (monthly orders between 200 and 10,000).
Helping Canadian Businesses with U.S. Sales Tax Challenges
Many Canadian eCommerce businesses are finding the U.S. market to be where their growth comes from. However, the fractured sales tax system in the United States poses a big challenge to stay compliant. There are no federal sales taxes in the United States; each state and, quite often, each municipality sets its own sales tax rate and rules. Online store operators are often required to collect sales tax based on the customer’s delivery address. In some states, the sales tax components may contain more than 5 sales taxes collected by different level of local governments.
The U.S. sales tax obligations involve 3 major parts and we are able to assist with each step:
- Sales tax number registration: eCommerce businesses are required to register a sales tax number once they cross the mandatory registration criteria (called “sales tax nexus”)
- Enable sales tax collection on eCommerce platform: eCommerce businesses should change the sales tax settings in Shopify (or WooCommerce, Amazon, eBay, etc.) to include the new sales tax number and start collecting sales taxes in the registered States.
- Filing and remitting collected sales taxes: If done manually, the eCommerce businesses should log into the different online portals hosted by each State to file and pay the collected sales taxes. There are some automated solutions out there and we can help them set it up.
